NHITA was founded in 1983 by Robert Berube, MEd, DSc, DC and Patrick Ian Cowan, PhD. The institute has its roots in the Merrimack Valley Integral Health Center, in Hudson NH, where the founders recognized the need for thorough and professional training in massage therapy. The clinical experience of the health care facility figured prominently in the content and philosophy of the school's massage therapy training program, which emphasizes natural approaches to health care.As an independently functioning educational facility the school was recognized by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) in 1983.
When I began investigating massage schools, I lived in northeastern Vermont at the time. I didn't choose the closest school or the one that cost the least. I chose the best. I chose NHITA. The New Hampshire Institute for Therapeutic Arts' curriculum offers a wide array of quality techniques, so that upon graduation, students feel confident working safely and effectively on clients walking through the office doors. And more importantly, they will know when to refer out to other qualified health care professionals.
Carol is Director of the school, providing administrative direction and student advisement at the Nashua campus. She is a licensed massage therapist by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and State of New Hampshire. Carol instructs Emergency Procedures, Health Service Management, Integrated Techniques, and Neuromuscular Technique.

I was a recent 2020 graduate of NHITA and the only complaint I had was the timing of Corona virus. I can't compliment NHITA enough for their proactive response to the epidemic and the rapid turnaround in instituting a remote plan. Our entire class graduated on time with pride and comradery. As a middle--aged individual, I lacked confidence that I could learn anything new, let alone the complex subject of Anatomy; but the support of faculty, encouraging and astute communication, and my own hard work and effort, I succeeded beyond my expectations. I will be forever grateful to NHITA and its staff for not only teaching me a profession that comes with great reward, but for giving me a new lease on life.

I am a recent graduate from NHITA and I cannot say enough great things about my time there. Upon registration I was one of those inquiring minds filled with question and concerns about this new venture a massage therapist and Carol was beyond patient and endlessly supportive with me. If she didn't have an answer at the time she would always get back to me which made me feel validated and supported from day 1.

She was my first great impression and her leadership and support transpired throughout the rest of the instructors over the course of the year and she was outstanding sharing her knowledge about Neuromuscular Technique. 'You know it!' RJ was phenomenal breaking the fundamentals of massage down to its core and you could tell her passion for the work through her teaching and thorough instruction.

She knew her stuff inside and out and was amazing at meeting all levels of learning and breaking the material down in many ways for all learners to understand. She had so much to offer and share and she went above and beyond to do so. 'She's so pretty!' Amanda was superhuman in her ability to break down the anatomy and physiology of the human body and her patience and willingness to help you succeed made anyone a believer in themselves and feel empowered.

It's a difficult and challenging program but with that said you come out of it prepared, knowledgeable with the insight you need to be the best massage therapist out there and feel confident in your abilities, performance and level of skill. Taylor was a joy, sharing her passion and insight working with those with Cancer, and a thorough overview of the many pathologies we may confront during our careers and the significances of massage, and her insight on Nutrition was impressive. Julie was a machine with her knowledge, insight and willingness and ability to share the benefits of Circulatory, Lymphatic Drainage, Sports and Deep Tissue Massage as well as Trigger Point.

Her patience and positive energy made every class a joy to be a part of and inspired me in so many ways. I personally suffer from a learning disability amongst other things and was intimidated about embarking on this new career path. I can confidently say it was the best choice I made and I couldn't imagine a better support system or leadership team to have pushed and prepared me for where I am at today. I know own my own massage business, and am so appreciative for all they have taught me. NHITA was the best choice I made in a long time and will get my #1 vote everytime!

I looked at a few schools before deciding on this one. I should start by saying that I had no prior experience/education in the medical field or with anatomy. After meeting with the director of this school I was confident it was the right choice. I know a lot of Massage Therapy students that come out of school intimidated to go out on their own. This wasn't the case here, the knowledge and skill I acquired from this school was MORE than enough to prepare me for the real world.

In fact I went right out to open my own business with success. All of the instructors worked to make sure all the students were caught up with the material, no matter what style of learning was required. Anytime I need advice about massage therapy, I don't hesitate to reach out to my old instructors even years after I've graduated. I highly recommend this school. I have so many wonderful things to say about my experience with this school that the only way to stay concise is to break it down into three key points: the school's accreditation, the knowledgeable instructors and the externship. The New Hampshire Institute for the Therapeutic Arts is the only accredited massage therapy school in the state. When searching for massage positions, particularly in the healthcare field like hospitals and clinics, under the education requirements it's common to see: 'graduated from an accredited school.' Even if you don't see yourself in a clinical setting post graduation, you would still have the option. Next, you will be receiving an incredible education from very knowledgeable instructors.

While their roster can change, they take great care in finding specialized instructors who have experience and passion in what they teach. Our anatomy and physiology teacher was a chiropractor; our sports, deep tissue and lymphatic instructor was a former athletic trainer; our hydrotherapy instructor was an aromatherapist; and the director and Swedish/Clinical instructors are massage therapists with decades of experience between the two of them.

Although this is an academically challenging program, it is well worth the outcome. And finally, an outstanding feature of this school is its externship requirement. This was intimidating at first, and I almost couldn't bring myself to do it, but in the end it was the best decision I ever made. This 150 hour externship, that has to be done in an outside licensed facility, gives you months of experience by the time you've graduated.

There is no such thing as a massage therapy apprenticeship, once you are licensed you are on your own. This externship allows you to practice and develop your skills outside your comfort zone, while still being under the protective umbrella of the school. You will graduate with confidence, and maybe even a job already lined up! All in all, if you're thinking of going to school to be a massage therapist, NHITA really is your best option. I drove three hours round trip twice a week for a year to attend this school, and it was worth every second of my time. Tessa M, LMT Massage by Tessa

I took a big move to transition careers, was told they were flexible with payment and overall seemed like a dynamic school. The director is not helpful and does not provide direct assistance. In fact, we have to secure our own externship for practicum hours. She gives you a paper with businesses who probably wanted students from 2006. None of it was up to date, even the quizzes and test that are administered. I am still waiting for a direct call from someone since I withdrew.
