Services
Joseph Institute is a leader in treatment for addictions to alcohol & drugs. Our program includes residential, inpatient rehab & detox, and most insurance plans are accepted. We are located between Altoona and State College, in the beautiful mountains of Central Pennsylvania.
We know the destructive power of drugs and how hard it is to let go of addiction. Whatever your drug of choice - opioids, cocaine, heroin, marijuana, benzos, stimulants - we know how to quickly detox you and start the road to recovery. Our Board Certified physician and 24/7 medical staff use a combination of non-addictive medications and holistic treatments that reduce the cravings of drug and alcohol addiction with minimal discomfort. Our drug addiction rehab center recognizes that drug and alcohol addiction is a disease with physiological and psychological causes and symptoms.
Successful rehab from alcohol dependence requires each person to identify and learn to manage the emotions that drive the desire to drink. For this reason, our inpatient alcohol rehab program has a strong focus on one-on-one counseling that enables the individual to address their unique issues. We help each individual progress through the steps that will be necessary to live without alcohol - and its destructive power in their life. Our alcohol detox program is managed by a Board Certified physician and has 24/7 medical staffing.

St. JOSEPH'S residential treatment program far exceeded my expectations. It's a sprawling campus with various buildings nestled in an area off the beaten path that's beautiful. From the first day when I arrived suffering emotionally and physically, I was greeted with smiles and introductions of welcome from clients and staff. The medical/nursing staff oriented me first and they were fantastic.

My experience was the nursing staff was unbelievable. They helped to nurture me back to health on a daily basis, up to my discharge from the program. The clinical/counseling staff were all professional and ethical, none more than my counselor, Ms EB who worked with me and assisted me in addressing some top priority clinical concerns, which propelled me and got me ready to move on to the next level of care. St. JOSEPH'S family and veteran centered services also helped my family understand the treatment process, but my family was educated on the effects of alcoholism and other drugs, that impact families.

As a veteran of the US armed forces, St. JOSEPH'S took great care to recognize the mental health issues that veterans face on a daily basis, which, if not addressed, can lead to alcohol and other drugs, including addiction. Ms B showed me the greatest compassion when I lost my father four days before my discharge. She, along with the other counselors, do not get the credit they deserve, because they are not just counselors, they are in effect, case managers who do it all.

The Residential Aides (RA) are amazing, and without them, there is no program. They have one of the toughest jobs, and that is to make sure we all get from point A to B, etc. Last, but certainly not least, is the food service staff, who make sure we are well fed and cared for from a nutritional standpoint. Well that's it, but not enough that I can say for St. JOSEPH'S.oh, there is. St. JOSEPH'S has the best Alumni program in the business, headed up by the best Alumni Coordinator.

I have never been to a rehab that provides the tools, support, events, activities, etc, to ensure that when you complete St. JOSEPH'S, you are not alone. So if you are struggling with alcoholism and other addictions, I can't think of a better place to go then, St. JOSEPH'S Institute for Addiction.

St Joe's is in a wonderful out in the wilds setting. The dorms and beds are very homey. The RAs have been through it and had so many personal stories to tell that really hit home for me. It's a full day when you go. After detox you have to go to all groups. Some groups are better than others but the staff does seem to care. My first counselor had been through it and was very easy to talk to.

Personally I didn't care for my second counselor but she ment well. If you need serious counseling it may not be the best place because of time issues for the staff. When you sign the paperwork that tells you what your insurance covers as far as I could tell it's the contract that commits you the for 30 days. I did 2 stays at St Joe's. The second time I just needed to reset and realize.

I had to break contract to leave after 20ish Days. Even though I was very open that I wasn't planning to do 30. My reward for being honest was being put on the no phone call list. My counselor didn't tell me beforehand. Food was hit n miss but don't go late. Also some people with dietary needs had very limited options

I had a truly life changing experience at SJI. The nurses, counselors, RA's, and even dietary, housekeeping, and grounds keeping staff are very kind, caring, and accessible if you need to talk. Almost all are in recovery themselves (and the ones who are not still care just as deeply). The best part about this place was the sense of community that the program fosters.

I have been through a couple of other programs over the last 15 years and I have NEVER kept in contact with any of my peers. I made friends here hopefully for life. St. Joseph's has an app that allows you to keep in touch with staff and people who completed the program, keep track of your days clean/sober, and learn about upcoming events. I'm grateful I stumbled (pun totally intended) into this place. It is so easy to find reasons to complain, but while I didn't get everything I wanted here, I left with exactly what I needed.

The amenities here are amazing! The bed, the bathrooms, the food, the grounds, the cleanliness of all the common spaces, the buildings are well-kept and it was nice to recover in a beautiful, safe space. (Thanks Dave n Kayla) The kitchen was incredibly accommodating to my dairy allergy throughout my stay. The cooks Nicole and Wendy also had an openness to take suggestions and accommodating the pallet of the new community and the changing season.

The RAs (Joe, Crystal, Lee, Sara, Dave & Tabby) are here for the right reasons and that is refreshing and encouraging. It was easy to talk to them one on one and they were always open to sharing their own personal recovery experience in the moment. The counselor that I was paired up with (Lauren) was empathetic, compassionate, supportive, rigorously honest in the kindest way, suggested in a productive manner which I appreciated very much from the very beginning.

I would've made the strides and progress if it weren't for St Josephs Institute's team of empathetic and caring people. Now that I'm home they have an amazing alumni program and app (Shout out to Shaina) that is keeping me connected with the friendships and relationships that I built while there. If you or a loved one is a need of help from active addiction I would not hesitate to give this place a call! I got exactly what I needed during my time of Uncertainty and I will forever be grateful for that.

KUDOS!. to the Administrators, Counselors, Nurses, Kitchen Staff, Groundskeepers, Maintenance Staff, Housekeepers, Drivers and anyone I missed. Everyone was empathetic, supportive and encouraging making for a positive community and a foundational recovery for me. It was amazing to watch my brothers and sisters heal physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually from the disease of addiction, each one a miracle. I pray that each can hold on to that gift.

Hi, my Name is Dana R. I attended St. Joe's from late November till Christmas Eve. My experience was above and beyond our expectations from the time I checked in till the time I was discharged. I loved the spiritual feeling that felt at St. Joe's. This is the second rehab that I have been to. This time around there is definitely a difference with my recovery! I really like the Alumni App that we can use to stay in touch with Shaina and other members in the community! I loved the surroundings too. Very beautiful!

The nursing and counseling staff where very good. However the facility itself needs to be updated. Several times our toilet bowls didn't flush and backed up for days with fecese overflowing, despite asking for help for days. The lock on the bathroom door was broke and needed to be kept shut with a large rock. The dresser draws didn't close. The food, when there was enough, was usually pretty bad.

I can think of at least 4 times during my stay they ran out of food. With no back up plan. They usually had no plastic utensils, therefore I washed mine and always kept it in my pocket. That should never happen. On another occasion, the schedule said we had Celebrate Recovery, however the RA working stated she was never trained in it so we would just wing it and talk.

Many of the groups where unstructured and just free time. They where usually short staff so many of the things on the schedule didn't actually happen. While there I saw drugs being passed around several times even after it was reported to staff. I understand that times are hard but safety should be a first priority.

This place is by far, hands down, the best rehab to go to. I went here in 2016, built bonds with people here, I still talk to to this day. My counselor was Kelly, she was brutally honest but so understanding & compassionate. The living quarters, dining area, just everywhere is peaceful & beautiful. Groups were amazing, and the food was good as well. If you need help, please come here. everyone TRULY cares about your recovery and the staff will form a relationship with you & invest in your personal recovery as well.

I traveled all the way from Dallas, TX to seek recovery at St. Joe's. It truly was a God send! The property is set beautifully in the mountains and well maintained with amazing amenities. There is a sauna, hot tub, and water massage bed available for use. There is also a gym on the grounds to help you work towards a healthier you physically. The food is fantastic and the chef even catered to those with allergies like gluten.

The nursing staff goes above and beyond to help make sure you receive the best of medical care while in treatment. The schedule keeps you busy and has plenty of opportunities to help you learn multiple tools for use once discharged. The RA staff does an amazing job of helping all clients feel welcomed and cared for. The counselors help to set you up for success and can even find sober living options for you if you're not ready to head right home after your journey begins at Joe's.

The alumni coordinator Shaina is an incredible source to utilize upon discharge! She will help you to get set up on the app that helps keep you in touch with the family you made while in treatment and she holds a weekly zoom meeting to continue to aide in you recovery journey. I couldn't have asked for a better place to recover after 20 years of alcohol and drug addiction. On Christmas I will have 5 months sober. Take that first step to getting your life back and come to St. Joe's, WE DO RECOVER!

St. Josephs institute didn't save me. They helped me save myself from MYSELF. when I was weak they built me up.when I was showing addictive behaviors they pointed it out.they broke me and guided me in my rebuild w/God at the forefront. I could only have gotten healthy if I wanted too. They provided the knowledge, wisdom and in every facet of that experience. If you can't stop but want to.? Go there and SURRENDER thell catch you, I promise!

This was my first (and hopefully only. one and done) rehab experience, but I could not imagine a better setting and staff to assist me in my recovery. It is extremely tranquil and the care and attention you receive is tailored to your needs. I plan to return, but as an alumni member. St. Joseph's, and the people I met there, will forever be in my heart and truly touched my soul.

The entire St Joe's staff is extremely caring and understanding and will work with you to achieve lasting sobriety, if you let them and you want it. I've been through 30 treatment facilities, over 25 years, of all levels of care, St Joe's being the last 3. Each time they were able to break down my wall of wanting to do things my way more and more, when I finally gave in completely and followed all of their recommendations did I truly stay sober.

I'm over a year sober now and counting! The longest I've ever been able to achieve. I have the love and respect and trust of my family back, a great job etc. The continued benefits of lasting sobriety are endless, if you're willing to give in and follow through with their recommendations. There's a saying I've come to remember through this process "If your way was so good, then what the hell are you doing here". Give in and happiness will follow! I'm eternally grateful for St. Joe's and their staff. Thank you!

Well I checked in to St. Joe's very unsure and afraid of what to expect. When I got to the check in point I was greeted by a man named Mark and immediately he made me feel welcome. My first night there I was still very unsure about this place and wanted to go home, but I knew being in that environment is what got me here in the first place. I got through the night and the next morning I got up early and jumped in with both feet to what they had to offer me.

Well I soon learned that if I would just listen and participate they had plenty to offer. The staff is very kind yet tough when needed and that's what most during my stay needed. If you are serious about recovering I believe St. Joe's can help you like they did me. Again if your serious! I'll just finish by saying this "I haven't had a drink since" and being sober is a wonderful way to feel.

I couldn't have chosen a better place to go in a time of need. The staff is very warm and welcoming. They truly care about your well-being. The campus is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The food is great and the program itself helps tremendously, giving you the tools you need to succeed. I'm really happy I spent my time here. Thanks for all you do, St. Joes staff!

This is a really good place to go for the help you may need. I found the staff very helpful. The counselors are great. It's a nice safe environment for people who need to get well. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to be at St Joseph's. I could have easily wound up somewhere else, this was my first time experiencing rehab. I got everything that I expected to get from this experience and I am much better for it.

I can say I was treated like a person here and not just a paycheck. I was able to make many friends with the staff and the clients. If you are looking for somewhere to go I would highly recommend this place.

I feel very lucky that I had the opportunity to go to St. Joe's for treatment last summer. The councilors are extensively knowledgeable, professional, and exceptionally caring. The whole facility is organized and well run. The campus is absolutely stunning. St. Joe's gave me inspiration, practical tools, and a framework to stay sober and navigate my way through the mental and emotional challenges I have faced in the past year. My life is immeasurably better today because of the time I spent at St. Joe's.
