Ten Thousand Waves is an exceptional mountain spa resort near Santa Fe, New Mexico that feels like a Japanese onsen. We're primarily a huge, pretty day spa, but for those who plan ahead, we are the finest destination spa they've ever experienced. Just a short stroll through the trees from the baths and treatment areas are thirteen hotel suites.
Services
What a great feeling to slip on a kimono and sandals and head out the door to embark on a journey of relaxation. Take a piece of the Spa with you and purchase a Ten Thousand Waves Kimono or any of our other Waves Wear products. A relaxing massage doesn't have to be such a rare experience. You can do it at home! Our soothing specialty massage oil can help keep you and your loved ones on the right track toward relaxation.
Over the years, we've visited hundreds of Japanese spas and have seen more of Japan than most native Japanese. Ten Thousand Waves has been leading tours to the great hot springs of Japan for years. Our trips are not for everyone. They are to other tours as the Waves is to other spas. Don't expect us to lead you by the hand every minute of the day to the same tourist-overrun hotspots.
From out-of-state, most of our guests fly into the Albuquerque airport, about an hour-and-a-half drive to Ten Thousand Waves. Recently, however, a number of airlines have added direct flights to the Santa Fe airport. Most people find a car convenient to get around Santa Fe. Take 285 south towards Santa Fe.
Ten Thousand Waves is inspired by the great Japanese mountain hot spring resorts. Everything we do has been constantly and thoughtfully refined over the last 40 years. We're ten minutes from downtown Santa Fe, but only minutes from the National Forest. There is nothing quite like this on the North American continent.

Ten Thousand Waves is a beautiful Japanese spa located in the mountains on the way to Ski Santa Fe. It's one of the most high end spas I've been to so I expected perfection, but there were a few things that could've been better. I felt like check in was a little rushed. The locker rooms had been remodeled recently so I liked that the sinks were very modern with automatic dispensers for soap, water and a dryer. Unfortunately, the used towel receptacle was overflowing and the private shower suites were not very clean upstairs so I had to go downstairs to use a different one prior to my massage.
I booked a therapeutic massage with K.D. as my therapist and he was fantastic! I felt like all my sore areas were worked on really well and he adjusted the pressure to fit my needs. He was personable and also allowed me to relax when I wasn't chatty. I would definitely come back for a massage by him. After the session, I was happy to see that the upstairs locker room had been cleaned so I was able to use this one without having to move all my stuff again.
Make sure to bring a comb because these aren't provided. Overall I really enjoyed my experience here and I would love to return and try a bath someday. It's definitely a splurge but well worth it!

Unbelievable they will not allow you to come in without having a vaccine! they must not keep up with any developments in the science after its has been proven that vaccines do not stop the spread and that you can still pass it on while vaccinated! so whats the purpose? what a dull narrow minded backwards place.

We absolutely loved our relaxing private pool experience here! My girlfriend and I drove to Santa Fe from Denver in 2021, but did not stay at the on-site lodging (so I cannot accurately comment on the rooms). However, I can comment on the private pool, which was Fantastic! As you can see from my attached photos, the pool itself was long and luxurious.
Being tall, it was nice that I could fully stretch out fully. There was also a traditional coal-fire sauna included in the room, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Additionally, there were private bathrooms and showers, and a sitting / lounging area with an open view of the beautiful nature surrounding, and a pitcher of ice cold drinking water was provided.
We were a bit unsure how it would play-out during COVID times, but the grounds were clean and regularly disinfected, and the staff at 10,000 Waves were professional and helpful in clearly explaining the rules to us when we arrived. I would definitely like to return again and recommend 10,000 Waves for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.

When I was allowed to stay here and enjoy the place, it was beautiful. It makes me sad that because I choose what goes or doesn't go into my body prevents me from being able to enjoy this place. I'm an RN and if they could see what I see, or know what I know; maybe things would be different. If you have so much faith in the vaccine, why worry about the people who choose not to get it?
It's disappointing but for those who are allowed in, it is a wonderful getaway. I stayed in one of the stand alone structures and it was absolutely perfect. I enjoyed the privacy, how welcomed my dog was, the private parking and the comforting feel of the room. I miss those days. It's also disappointing to see the owners responses to some people. The condescending tone is inappropriate and unnecessary. No need to be hurtful.

I've loved this place in the past, it was truly beautiful and relaxing. When creating my stay in Santa Fe this weekend for my daughter's competition in town, I made sure to book a reservation at the pools for us - it doubled as healing for her muscles and a small bday gift to myself. I booked this a month ago. Sadly, I forgot my vaccination card at home in CO, but did remember my daughter's.
I called a couple hours ahead of our reservation when I realized I forgot my card. They would not make any exception (even though there's no way I would get my 13 yr old daughter vaccinated and not myself.?!) and they charged me 50% of my reservation for cancelling under 24 hours. They offered to accept a photo of it, but as a single mom, I don't have anyone at home who could send it.
I don't often buy things for myself and this one stings extra hard. The place is beautiful (although I haven't been there since pre-Covid), customer service is horrible. I understand being careful about Covid- I was a massage therapist who lost my business to it after all- but there is such thing as overly cautious and just being an asshole about it.
And to respond to your comment, Duke - are you all really being careful, or at this point are you just proving a point? I reserved a private pool for my daughter and I, outdoors, and would have been happy to wear a mask. Transmission to anyone would have been low to impossible. I'm on your side, I was first in line to get a vaccine when I was able.
My point was that you all were jerks about it- a simple mistake that I made in my excitement to get out the door on my first little road trip in 3 years. The other part of Covid is how it's affecting our mental health, and you may want to ask yourself if you're really doing more harm than good at this point. I just got home from driving today. Here's a photo of my Covid card. that I didn't need anywhere else on my trip (actually I haven't been asked for it once in the last two years). Thanks for charging me anyway

Divine experience. If I lived here, I'd go every week. Booked first available and was given the Shoji bath. Beautiful and spacious set-up with jetted hot tub, cold plunge, sauna, and full bath. They provide toiletries, hair dryer, robe, towels and a pitcher of ice water. The tub and plunge pool are open to the outdoors and overlook an area with trees.
It's private, peaceful and very romantic. We were allowed to bring our dog, and even though she hates water, she loved hanging out with us on the deck. I don't normally enjoy saunas but this one was terrific. A large window at the top framing a beautiful tree and water to pour over large hot stones and create a bit of steam. We both felt completely relaxed after this experience. Highly recommend it.

Amazing! We stayed in 1/2 moon which had a private courtyard and was off the main path, meaning no one walking by your room to go to the spa/dinner. The room was lovely and they had a nice little set up for our dog. It's also next to a small parking lot which is great for loading in/out of the car. Nice amenities in the room like robes, wet bar, fridge, coffee/tea and home made granola. Yes, it is a little tricky to find the entrance to the spa to check in when you first arrive (they could have a few more arrows), but after that the rest is easy. We enjoyed the large soaking pool many times. The restaurant is not to be missed. We will be back!

My whole life has led to the incredible bliss that comes with 90 minutes in a private soak and lunch at Ten Thousand Waves. Vaccines required for peace of mind. The bidet is the most amazing bidet I've ever experienced. The design of the entire facility is incredibly beautiful in its intention. I will be spending a day here every time i visit my sister in Santa Fe. The eggplant was perfect. One of the best days of my life. I look forward to returning.

Ten Thousand Waves is so uniquely an extremely special place. For my husband and I who love all things Japanese, from the culture, to the simplicity, to the tiny details of living every moment on purpose and perfectly, we are absolutely in love with this property and our experience at Ten Thousand Waves. The property itself is so unassuming from the road.
From the road, it almost appears that this place could possibly be a retreat spot for tree huggers or hippies.is there even running water? LOL! But once you check in at the spa, once you see your room, once you slip off your western clothes and put on your kimono, the outside world slips away just a bit and you feel the magic. Could I be sensing my inner soul and my Ikigai?
We come from a fast paced Las Vegas life and we seek out spots like Ten Thousand Waves where we can actually disconnect and feel like we have paused and breath slower. We flew into Albuquerque, rented a car, made the hour drive up to Santa Fe to go to Ten Thousand Waves for 3 nights. We made our hotel reservation months in advance and that is a must, because their rooms are limited to less than a dozen and in high demand.
I would find it difficult to actually cover all the things we loved about our experience at Ten Thousand Waves, so let me attempt to highlight just a few of the details that resonated with us. 1) The woodwork around the common spaces and tub areas is really quite special. With a master woodworker from Japan on property I was advised, it shows in the detail of this craftsmanship. 2) With few hotel rooms and also limited tub offerings, we enjoyed the intimate experience of not encountering many other guests visiting the property.
I know locals and others have used Yelp to gripe about rates and the owners increasing rates to limit people, but that is exactly what we loved about this property and it is worth the money to travelers like us to pay for more exclusivity and intimate quite spaces. We would expect this of a Japanese Wellness spa and we found it here. 3) Although the world continues to evolve almost weekly on covid protocols, we loved that this property required quests to be vaccinated and show proof of vaccination during our stay.
We have enjoyed supporting business owners with our dollars that attempted to follow covid rules to ensure guests and staff were safe. With that, this property is incredibly clean, from tubs to guest rooms. 4) The hospitality details make a difference (in the Japanese tradition they are everything).a leather luggage rack in the room, a DryBar hairdryer, Novita bidet toilet and Kohler shower heads in the bathrooms, excellent reading lights right at the bed. 5) The staff is very laid back, wearing their own clothing versus a corporate culture of sameness.
Each of their own personalities resonated in our interactions with each, but each are kind, welcoming, accommodating, helpful and even keeled. There is a sameness to the calmness amongst the staff, this was apparent to us as we spent our three days around them all. 6) Izanami (the one restaurant on property and only open for dinner) is worth the time and money.
We are a bit critical of Japanese food and my husband and I were blown away by fresh quality and authenticity of this dining experience (where we ate twice and in our kimonos both times!). For a place out in the middle of nowhere compared to our high brow city life, we found the fish quality to almost exceed what we can get in Las Vegas. How is this possible?
They have things shipped in every few days like clockwork. After 40 years, this property clearly knows what they are doing and Izanami displays this with an unparalleled sake menu, quality meet and fish and exceptional Japanese culture. 7) There are no clocks. The property is quiet. Life is simple when we were there. 8) My facialist was trained on facial massage in Japan.
I had a massage from a excellent woman who has worked at the property for 40 years. I had another massage from a woman who has been there for 20 years. This retention and skill detail of the staff speaks to the spirit that runs through this property. 9) The property is on a hill and there is a bit of walking, lots of stairs and dirt roads. With that, I am sure they have transport to bring guests up to the spa if walking is an issue, but simply know there are stairs and walking involved while on property.
At nighttime from the restaurant, having the lantern that is supplied in the room with us was helpful. 10) We stayed in the brand new Emperor Room, Chogetsu. Two beds and charming, We booked it sight unseen, that is how new it was. Lovely little patio, so comfortable, welcoming and very Japanese in its simplicity. This property was off our radar before our stay earlier this month. On our global list of exceptional spa experiences, Ten Thousand Waves is now on that list for us. We hope to return again very soon.

Came with my girlfriend for a private soak. The property is beautiful and the amenities are top notch. The private soak areas have a large hot tub (probably large enough to comfortably fit 6 to 8 people), a private sauna, private bathroom with shower, a cold dip tub, and filtered water tap. The area had the perfect amount of dappled shade, and a view of part of the mountainside. 90 minutes was the perfect amount of time to fully relax and get to enjoy everything.
We arrived about an hour early and we were able to use the foot bath and meditation room before our soak. The gift shop has a lot of unique Japanese and health/beauty items. It's definitely worth a walk through. I plan to return for another deeply relaxing day.

What a special space. We booked the Japanese soaking tub and had the most wonderful, unique experience. The bath we booked was partly indoor/outdoor and we took advantage of the Japanese seated shower, the soaking tub, hot/wet sauna and surprisingly we especially enjoyed the relaxation berth after a long hot soak in the tub. The amenities (shower gel, hair shampoo and conditioner, pine scented body lotion) were divine.
The grounds are beautiful, the reception staff accommodating and knowledgeable. We appreciated their "proof of vaccination" policy management put in place in the best interest of their staff and patrons. The bathing facility was spotless as well. Highly recommend.

We opted for the Japanese ofuro hot tub experience ($75/person for 1.5 hours). The private tub is deep and relaxing and easily accommodates a party of 4. There is a separate shower and toilet with full amenities as well as a private sauna and cooling mattress. It snowed as we enjoyed the hot tub under a roof so we had the benefits of an open air experience while being covered from the elements. Highly recommend for relaxation.

A unique and unexpected find in Santa Fe. We chose the New Wave tub due to it has the underwater recliner. The facility is very clean and well organized. We loved the private nature of the tub, shower and the sauna. 90-minute is a good amount of time. I don't think we will be able to stay there for too much longer. The hot tub is not the super hot type, and makes it easier to stay there a bit longer.
We arrived a few minutes earlier, and they let us in earlier instead of kept us waiting. The gift shop near the check in/out area is interesting too. It's not an inexpensive experience, though we truly enjoyed our time there.

This was our second visit to Ten Thousand Waves. Last year just for a private bath, this year we treated ourselves to a 3 night stay, spa services, and a private bath. I am fully in support of their Covid policies, which are in place to keep their staff & guests safe. I wish more companies took this bold of a stance. After a minor issue with our room, we received top notch customer service & hospitality from housekeeping manager, Aldair.
He was friendly, actively listened to our disappointments, and found an immediate solution. We also had wonderful interactions with supervisor, Keita, who made us feel heard & appreciated and valued our feedback. Even with a small hiccup in the beginning of our stay, these 2 employees (in addition to the amazing massage therapists & estheticians) have made us lifelong patrons of Ten Thousand Waves.

I have been a huge fan and supporter of 10,000 waves for many years. I think it's a very special place. However, I am very disappointed in the changes that have been made since COVID. While I have my own opinions about COVID restrictions that never seem worth voicing, my issues are with the new pricing and the removal of the communal tub. In my opinion, 10,000 waves has become a place that is exclusive, rather than inclusive. Santa Fe is a tough town from a monetary standpoint - particularly for those of us in the lower bracketed income range.
I work hard in the arts community at a prominent gallery, and while I make a good living, $160 to soak for 90 minutes is not something that is very doable for me unless it's a special occasion. I used to soak regularly, and took pride in the fact that such a unique destination with an international reputation was accessible to me at $25. (I also understand that prices increase with inflation, and would happily pay more than $25, within reason).
Every year, it feels like there is more and more that is not accessible to me because of raised prices and what feels like a push towards exclusivity. When this happens, there is a certain demographic of people who are made the priority, and another demographic that is pushed further and further out and excluded from participating in many parts of the community.
I think it's important for a wide range of people to have access to places that can broaden their perspectives of culture, and that their presence in these spaces helps create a vibrant energy that is crucial in any cultural hub. I hope someday 10,000 waves makes changes to become more inclusive so a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds can enjoy everything it has to offer.

Came here for an early Valentine's day weekend. It was absolutely lovely. We reserved two baths for the day, I highly recommend the waterfall bath! They gave us robes in the room but mine was a little snug but I was able to purchase a fluffy sized one at the gift shop. Such a beautiful place to stay!

This establishment has the craziest Covid regulations! I wanted to stay here for my anniversary but they made it very difficult and changed the rules three times before our stay. When I called to cancel the person at the front desk was very rude and short with me. I had been there about five or six times before and I was looking forward to coming but I will never go there again!
I live out of state but my family lives in Santa Fe and we recommend it to everyone. Now we will never tell anyone to set foot on this property.! Needless to say I was very disappointed in the way I was treated.

What happened to this place? Ladies tub/sauna no longer exists-it was a safe, comfortable haven. Private tub is aged and no heat in freezing bathroom, could not use the sauna due to strong gas fumes. and the railing fell down. Co-ed shower/locker room with no toilet! (Guess what the shower was used for). No longer has the lovely cucumber and lemon water available--big fat headache!
Or maybe it was the the gas fumes. Very expensive oil rub--what happened to massage? In the end you are forced to tip not only the therapist, but also the cleaning people whom I never saw, don't they get paid? I am a Santa Fe resident coming to TTW for over 20 years (except last 2 years due to pandemic)--greatly disappointed.

Really enjoy the stay here. The grand bath is wonderful. The room is also very decent. The front desk is friendly but they didn't handle my delivery package very well. Called in advance to ask front desk to take the birthday follower package to my room. But I got the followers the day after (the followers were just locked in delivery room) which missed the birthday.

I visited Ten Thousand Waves twice during my trip to Santa Fe and have to say that while I enjoyed my time there, I can't give it 5 stars do to the value for the price. It's definitely not cheap to come here. I was able to book the spa service Nose to Toes about a week in advance for $219 which also came with day access to the spa including the Grand Bath.
When I booked that appointment I also asked about visiting one of the hot tubs a different day and was told that the hot tubs are extremely popular and book up far in advance. I was given the tip to look for cancellations online, book "any available tub" for $69 and then call them to see which tub I got. That approach worked and after monitoring the website for about half a week, I was able to book a hot tub for Friday at 7:15pm.
When I called them I found out it was one of their most desirable tubs Waterfall. I was super excited for both my visits and everything looked good when I arrived on Friday night. The grounds leading up to the spa are well manicured and beautiful. So far, so good. I have a great check-in experience and am led to the private tub Waterfall, which fits 10 people, but that I have all to myself. Unfortunately, the Waterfall part of the cold plunge where the hot tub gets its signature name either wasn't working or wasn't turned on.
It is also not very relaxing to be in a hot tub at altitude for very long, so even though you are paying for 1 hr 30 mins, you will be over it much sooner than that. I wish they had an outdoor shower to dump cold water on you because that would have been easier to cool off than the tiny cold plunge. Of course, if the waterfall was actually working that would probably work too.
On top of it, the indoor shower was very basic and the place I was staying in Santa Fe had a much nicer shower than here at the spa. When I went back the next day on Saturday, I was given a robe that was too small for my body type and luckily it didn't fall off while I was wearing it and went to ask the staff for another robe. Luckily the next one they gave me actually fit me.
I liked my massage therapist and thought she was very knowledgeable, but the prices here require this to be one of the pinnacle experiences of your life and it just wasn't at that level. Overall, I think they definitely need to renovate the indoor showers and if the waterfall is not working for Waterfall then call people to inform them before coming or offering a discount once they arrive.
At least an explanation would have been nice rather than just sort of discover that it's not working or turned off once you get there. I'm glad I came for both visits, but I'm not sure if I'll come again given the prices.
First of all, I would want to give 0 star if I can. However, the SPA was wonderful, so I want to give some credit for the SPA. Unfortunately, other facilities and services were down to earth, so 2 star. The whole property was so so. Like the room was so so, the shower handle goes around and around; I had either cold or hot shower, the floor squeaks, and so on.
In addition, there was no service in the restaurant. They seated us outside saying there was no table available inside when it was 42 degrees outside. Funny thing was that we were the only ones seated outside. We felt they kicked us out. The host said indoor was for reservation, but we had a reservation. The food was mediocre at the best. Worse, the server got angry at us when we tried to teach correct pronunciation of "Soba." Surprisingly, they don't offer transportation from the villa to the front desk in the morning. We need to drag our suitcases up the unpaved hill. The whole experience wasn't worth for money, after all.

I had a weird experience with the quality of my massage therapist, and I hope to return to make up for that experience. The grounds were gorgeous, the staff was incredible, but my massage was one of the worst I have ever received. There was a serious lack of technique implemented, she really just poked at my neck for 30 minutes on each side instead of giving me a fully body massage that I paid for, then verbally shouted "oh no I forgot your foot treatment!" and I got a rushed foot treatment.
It wasn't relaxing at all as you can imagine. I contacted Ten Thousand Waves and they did compensate me for the experience but had zero interest in understanding what went wrong or how to fix it in the future with training. Or if they did, they did not communicate that to me. That is the only reason I am writing a review after speaking directly with Ten Thousand Waves is because I still don't feel the situation was handled correctly.
I didn't even need any sort of compensation, I was just wanting to hear it was being addressed and it felt more like they didn't believe me and wanted to do whatever they could to get me to go away. If you have a weird issue here with the quality of your massage, speak up about it to prevent it from happening to a future client who is paying a lot of money for this experience!

Finally, I took a trip hiking (well, more like driving up the mountains) to visit Ten Thousand Waves, a place that I had noted/bookmarked and gotten on their mailing list back 10+ years ago! Why? I'm a huge spa goer and a fan of visiting a serene, cultural place.so Ten Thousand Waves fits what I was looking for. Plus, I have a huge travel bug, so, I had been following their newsletter re: their laid back annual Japan trips (which I had yet to take).hoping that one day, I'd save up enough money and finally take a plunge to go with them!
This was my first time on the ground and after parking and a short walk up the stairs to the main lobby/shop area, I immediately felt a sense of serenity all around. The ground is kept clean and the area surrounding the resort/spa is nice and quiet. You can get a nice quiet time to relax, whichever occasion you are here for: hotel stay, hot soak, or Japanese food fanfare at Izanami (their on-site restaurant).
The staff was polite and helpful. Immediately after entering the shop, the staff greeted and asked if I needed any help. The lady who rang the bill for me (shhh.my partner doesn't know yet what I'm getting him for V-day + Birthday combi present) was also thoughtful, got me a nice envelope to present my gift, and took my partner's name down so that they wouldn't run into any problem if he attempted to cash the giftcard I bought. Overall, a really nice, serene place.
I actually hadn't taken a soak there yet but my partner did and he really enjoyed it. One of these days, though, I'm hoping I'm hoping I could splurge for a nice stay + a long hot bath session at Ten Thousand Waves.or even better, take a trip to Japan with them!
